Spring / Summer Newsletter June, 2010

It's a busy time in the neighborhood! As a successful winter riding season ended, the ATV season got into high gear. The Dun-Good area was more fortunate in that we recieved a little more snow at the right times to keep the trails rideable longer than most of Marinette County. The trails closed for the spring thaw, but reopened earlier than usual due to the dry conditions. The rush was on to get the spring trail work done. Trails were brushed and cleared of limbs and downed trees following some strong winds, bridges were repaired, rock removed, signs checked and replaced as necessary and troublesome areas were attended to. The groomer and the other trail equipment was used to ready the trails for the ATV'ers. Believe me, when a club maintains year round trails there is no "off season"! Thankfully the Dun-Good Riders have a good group of hard working volunteers who donate countless hours to making the trails enjoyable and safe to ride. The club has invested in quality equipment and the results are safe, enjoyable trails. THANK YOU TO ALL! Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

OH, but let's not forget about all the other volunteers who help to keep a busy club running smoothly! There is no end to the paperwork required for funding, tracking work hours, applying for grants, settling land use issues, attending county and statewide meetings and workshops in order to stay on top of concerns facing our motorized sports, keeping accurate club records, maintaining memberships, answering correspondence and working at fund raisers and selling rafle tickets and on and on. The trails are what we are all about, but a lot of the work goes on behind the scenes. So, also a THANK YOU to all those who keep the paperwork flowing!

The area had less snow and very little rain this spring. Conditions were very dusty and the fire danger was extreme. Rain finally came within the last 2 weeks. Now things look fresh and green again. There are several areas along the trail that are "sensitive" to the dust, near homes and in towns. In previous years, the club did apply a dust control agent to these areas. We would contract out for it and because it was very costly, we could only afford to do it on a limited basis. After much research, it was agreed that the club could save money by purchasing a spray rig and the dust control agent and applying it ourselves on an as needed basis. We haven't been able to try it out yet because it hasn't stopped raining since we bought it! But it's ready to go if an when it gets dusty again.

Check the web site for the year ending report posted by Gale Ullman. That will fill you in on what's been happening with the trails, the equipment and the building expansion.

Riders will be happy to hear that the Town of Amberg has opened quite a few roads for ATV usage. These are routes and do not follow the snowmobile trail that you may be familiar with. Follow the signs and stay on the trail, please! This opens up more opportunities to ride on the east side of Hwy 141. By taking Benson Lake Road from Athlestane into Amberg, riding through town and following the routes, you can make a loop, stopping at Green Acres and Four Seasons, through Pembine and back to Dunbar. For more information on the Amberg routes, stop by Angel's Amberg Pub or the Driftwood Gas Station. Athelstane also has legal access to ATV's so you can get gas there before returning to Dunbar or Goodman.

There are several business changes among our trail sponsors this year. Stop by Richards and say hello to Rick Newingham the new owner. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and the hotel is open as always. The phone number remains the same, 715-324-5444. The former owner, Debbie, still lives in town so you might see her out and about. Thanks to Debbie for all the support she gave the Dun-Good Riders and a warm welcome to Rick. We wish you much success with your new venture.

The Lake Hilbert Campground is open and operating this season following the passing of Terry Wagner. The phone number there remains the same, 715-336-3013. This is an ATV friendly spot to camp for the week end or to park your unit for the season. It's trail side camping, lots of trees and shade, the lake is across the street and there is a small store and cafe on site.

After July 1st you'll find Bill & Theresa Ebert back at the Trails End one mile west of Goodman on Highway 8. Check with them for food and drink specials and upcoming events.Trails End is always a fun place to stop for refreshments. Thanks to the Grahn's for their past support of the Dun-Good Riders. Best wishes to all!

I know many of you will remember Eddie & Dorothy Richards. Saw an article and a picture in the paper showing Edward Richards receiving a lifetime privlege membership certificate from Wild Rivers Lions Club. Ed currently resides at Mary Hill Manor in Niagara and recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Congratulations!

The Dun-Good Riders made a monetary donation to the new Dunbar Veterans Park and purchased a memorial brick to honor all veterans. Further information regarding the park is available from Diana Schultz at North Country Inn in Dunbar, 715-324-5737. The club also donated to the Goodman Fire & Rescue fundraiser.

When planning your ATV adventure, please remember that the Grand Motel in Pembine as well as the BP Station on Hwy 141 are now accessible by trail. The trail from Pembine going east can take you up along the Menoiminee River or take the loop going to Green Acres and Miscauno Island. Stop at Green Acres, ("it's the place to be"....) Everyone is welcome inside for big thick burgers, tasty homemade pizza and Friday Fish Fry. As more trails and routes are approved, so do the riding opportunities expand. Get a map, check the trails and try a new adventure! UTV's are welcome on all Marinette County ATV approved trails and routes. They must be registered with the DNR for the 2-year period ending in June of 2012.

Members of the Dun-Good Riders will be attending the WATVA Northeast Regional Meeting at the Townsend Town Hall on July 31st. All the details aren't worked out yet, but there will be an ATV ride around the area, lunch provided by the area clubs, and equipment demos, followed by the meeting  at 2:30 p.m. Although the meeting covers the business side of ATV trails, everyone is welcome. All ATV'ers would find it interesting and this could give riders a new view of all that is involved in providing a trail system for the public to enjoy. For up to date information on everything Wisconsin ATV related, see WATVA's web site, www.watva.org.

Members interested in attending the annual St. Hilbert Shrine picnic on August 7th will meet at the North Country Inn at 10:00 a.m. that  day. You may ride ATV's or go by car. This is an opportunity to visit a beautiful, peacful spot in the woods dedicated to St. Hilbert, the patron saint of hunters. It's well worth the visit and now has legal ATV and snowmobile access.

Friday September 17th kicks off the club's annual Color Rama Poker Run, ending on Sunday September 26th. Cards will be available from local business places as well as at the club building on Hwy 8 during the Open House on Saturday September 25th. More information about the Poker Run will be posted on the web site as the date gets closer.

The annual Open House and Fun Day will be at the club building on Saturday, September 25th beginning at 10:00 a.m. The big raffle drawing will be at 5:00 p.m. Prizes this year are 1st) 2010 Polaris 500 H.O. The July 20th monthly meeting & annual meeting will be held at the club building. Prior to the meeting there will be a cookout for the members attending. You may bring a dish to share. The Annual Meeting will be held following the regular monthly meeting. This year elections will be held for president, treasurer, and 2 board of directors. Nominations were accepted at the June 15th meeting and will be accpted again at the July meeting. Current nominations are Pat Mullarky, president; Dave Schultz, treasurer; Bill Ackley and Gerry Gudowicz, board of directors.
